I came across this quote while cruising Pinterest.
Butterflies can’t see their wings. They can’t see how truly beautiful they are, but everyone else can. People are like that as well. – http://sharifahnorhamidah.blogspot.com/
It resonated with me because so often in my work I come across people who have yet to find and see the true beauty they possess within. I find that most people, myself included at times, get caught up in the negative scripts they create internally. These scripts are generated by internalizing the messages we receive throughout our lifetime, the result being the belief we simply aren’t “good enough,” for a combination of reasons.
Whatever the case may be, at some point people find themselves in a place where they lack the ability to appreciate the good they possess both inside and out. This struggle can last throughout the recovery process, even as their behaviors may improve. Again, people become accustomed to the irrational and negative thoughts which prevents them from acknowledging and recognizing the growth they have made in treatment and recovery.
I challenge you to take the time to acknowledge the beauty of your wings. Acknowledge and accept the journey that you have been on thus far in treatment and recovery, and accept the uncertain journey and re-discovered beauty as you move forward. Find the beauty within the process and, most importantly, see the beauty within yourself.
